LaVar Ball – Early Life and Athletic Pursuits
Growing up in South Los Angeles, LaVar was one of five sons born to Anderson and Maria Ball. He attended Canoga Park High School, where he excelled as a quarterback in football and played as a forward in basketball. Standing 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighing 250 pounds by his senior year, his physical prowess was evident early on.
After high school, LaVar pursued collegiate athletics, starting at West Los Angeles College. During the 1985–1986 season, he set a school record by securing 316 rebounds. His performance included a standout game with 33 points and 18 rebounds against Porterville College. Seeking greater challenges, he transferred to Washington State University for the 1987–1988 season, where he started as a forward.
However, his tenure there was brief, averaging 2.2 points and 2.3 rebounds over 26 games. He then moved to California State University, Los Angeles, competing in NCAA Division II alongside three of his brothers. In the 1989–1990 season, LaVar averaged 15.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, earning a spot on the All-CCAA first team.
In addition to basketball, LaVar explored a career in professional football. He had brief stints with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers in 1995, primarily on their practice squads, and played for the London Monarchs in the World League of American Football. Despite these opportunities, he did not appear in regular-season NFL games.
Transition to Business and Family Focus
LaVar met his wife, Tina Slatinsky, at Cal State Los Angeles, and they married in 1997. Together, they have three sons: Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo. He emphasized skill development and mental toughness, often coaching them in Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) competitions under his team, Big Ballers VXT.
In 2016, capitalizing on the burgeoning basketball careers of his sons, LaVar co-founded Big Baller Brand, a sports apparel company. The brand aimed to offer an alternative to traditional endorsements, allowing athletes greater control over their image and earnings. In 2017, the Ball family starred in a reality television series titled “Ball in the Family,” which aired on Facebook Watch. The show provided an inside look into their daily lives, highlighting the dynamics of a family striving for success in professional sports. The series further amplified LaVar’s media presence and offered viewers a nuanced perspective on his parenting and business strategies.
Challenges and Resilience
Despite the brand’s initial success, Big Baller Brand faced challenges, including customer service complaints and internal disputes. In 2019, Lonzo Ball severed ties with the company’s co-founder, Alan Foster, over allegations of financial misconduct involving $1.5 million. This controversy led to discussions about the brand’s future and its operational integrity.
In February 2025, LaVar underwent a significant personal challenge when he had his right foot amputated due to a serious medical issue.
